Justice for Chief

I came across an awful and disturbing story recently. I know many of you may have also seen it through other sources or through my own Facebook or Twitter. I need to write about it and post it here and try to reach as many people as possible. I also feel like the more people who post or express their outrage and concern about, the better for Chief and his poor human. At the very least he will know that Chief is not forgotten and that there are quality, loving people in this world.

Our friends over at Rock Creek Scotties has a post about lovely little Chief. Chief was in his own back yard in Burlington, Iowa when someone, or someones, trespassed into the yard and assaulted him viciously. Chief, like a good Scottie, tried to fight for his life but lost his battle and passed over the Rainbow Bridge 6 days later on November 29th. Chief's human, Patrick Koval, is offering a $1000 reward for anyone who can help him find the cowardly lowlifes that did this to Chief. There is also a Facebook page Justice for Chief. You can also read more about the story here. Warning, there may be some disturbing pictures or descriptions on these sites. I know it was incredibly hard for me to look at the pictures of that beautiful dog and his injury. I could not even get through the news story, it is just too infuriating and emotional.

I'm sorry for such a downer post, but not everything in life is rosy. As much as I'd like to think that bad things don't happen to innocent little animals, children and people.....they do. Really awful things. Poor Chief suffered for days before ultimately dying from his injuries. The scary thing, from reading part of the news story, is that this happened when the family was home! I leave my dogs outside to play around while I sit inside and do housework or sew or whatever every day! I have a fenced yard, but so did Chief! This terrifies me as something happening to my dogs is one of my very greatest fears. They are like my children, I am here to protect them and care for them.

Please take the time to email the chief of police, news station, and the mayor of the area and DEMAND that acts of animal cruelty be treated seriously and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. You can reach these people at these email addresses:

the mayor of Burlington, Iowa - ellb@burlingtoniowa.org

RIP Chief
